English Oak Round

This commission started after a conversation at a craft fair. The client had said they were looking for a simple side table that was easy to move around.

They sent me an email after this first brief chat, and I asked them a few more questions about dimensions and what they wanted to put on the table etc.

They were very clear that they wanted it to be a cube shape, to be big enough to hold a drink and a side plate, and for it to be easy to transport.

I had been playing around in my head for a while the idea of a clean cut, squarish side table so I was very exited to get to work on this piece.

As usual I did a few sketches based on what they had said, and then quickly moved out to CAD design on my PC.

I wanted something chunky, but easy to move around, so I decided to run with the idea of having a nice thick table top, but I designed these rounded over legs, so that the table could easily be slid from room to room whilst also offering some visual softness.. Not only do they work great but they feel fantastic to the touch. The clients were very happy with this design idea, so once we had agreed on all of the details, I took a 50% deposit, ordered the wood and set a provisional completion date.

It was great fun building this piece, as all of the rounded corners are done by hand with traditional tools. They serve to really elevate the grain in this wonderful English Oak, whilst still leaving you with a very solid table.

I also fitted some traditional ‘buttons’ on the underneath which allow for seasonal movement in the wood, and of course fitted my Goldfinch Brookes stamp.

The piece was sent in the post, in a secure plywood box that I made specifically for the piece and it arrived safe and sound in the clients home in South Cheshire.

The clients had this to say ‘Goldfinch Brookes met the piece perfectly. Wonderful wood and wonderful design. Very stylish and will last us forever, thank you’

This piece is available in standard sizes here, or if indeed you want custom sizes, this piece can be doubled up as a bench for example, then please email me here.
