I Hope So
I HOPE SO is a wall hanging sculptural piece made from English Elm and Rippled Sycamore. This unique and stunning piece of art was hand crafted in my Manchester, UK workshop.
This piece is my first major foray away from the strict rules and forms of making furniture. I have felt a yearning to create this kind of piece for many years.
The rich brown Elm wood is mother nature, in all of her twists, turns and formations. The hand chiselled White Sycamore shapes represent us humans. I am fascinated by the question of how well do we fit in with nature? How succesful are we in living side by side with it? Perhaps in some ways we do indeed manage it, but other times no matter how hard we try we stand out.
The choice of timbers here was most significant. Elm is an extremely strong wood, but not stable. It moves in and out, expands and contracts whilst never quite breaking. Whereas Sycamore, the human in this case can just about grow anywhere it wants. Give it the slightest crack and it's seeds will germinate and grow quickly.
I HOPE SO is a wish, that as time goes by we learn to work not against nature, but in harmony with it.
